Died from Covid hospital protocol

Here is our story. My husband was the youngest of 10 children.  The Monday before thanksgiving week in 2021, His oldest brother Joe was found dead.  They think he had a massive heart attack.  That week and the following weekend, all the family came into the area for his funeral.  I had a large group of family staying with my husband, myself and our 16 year old daughter Reilly.  We had a houseful on Thanksgiving day for dinner.  People came and went all week, Vince’s 91 year old Mom was staying at our house, along with his 2 sisters, one brother in law, their 4 adult children, and their 2 grandchildren, and one boyfriend of the one daughter.  On the Friday before Joe’s funeral, I went to set up the hall, and move tables and chairs, and make sure all was set up for the next day.  I didn’t make it home to see my Mother in law and her 88 year old sister Virgina, that was there all day visiting.  Jeanne, Virgina’s daughter, called Saturday and said she wouldn’t make the funeral, and that her Mom had fallen.  Come to find out she had a massive heart attack and fell headfirst into a concrete wall, and died.  We got through Joe’s funeral that Saturday and all went back to my house.  On Sunday the 28^th, my husband complained that he wasn’t feeling great.  He went to work on Monday and Tuesday he came home early.  Everyone in the house tested for Covid and everyone had it, except me.  We tried to get the antibodies, anything we could think of.  We were worried about his mother the most.  She wanted to wait until Thursday to leave so she could be at her sister’s funeral.  We made her go and view her sister, and then leave the very next day, Wednesday December 1st.  When they got back to NC, they all got the antibodies and were fine.  My 16 year old daughter had covid as well, but felt better after about 4 days.  Vince was still sick 5 days after that.  He had gotten up and felt better on Sunday, but by Sunday night didn’t feel well again.  Monday his sister and the nieces were calling begging us to take him to the hospital.  Finally around noon, Vince agreed to go, and Reilly and I dropped him off at the emergency room and they would not let us go with him.  I could see the back of him sitting in a chair beyond the door from the parking lot, but they didn’t take him back for about 20 minutes.  Taking him to the hospital was my first biggest regret.  This was December 6^th 2021.

I was frantic, because I couldn’t be with him.  But we were able to facetime to see him.  Kristina, Alyssa and Reilly, his daughters, were all making jokes and keeping him in great spirits.  I have photos of him with the monitor behind him with O2 levels well in the higher 90’s.  Even Dr. Larj said he was doing great.  They were proning him every other day and by Thursday he was in pain from his spinal stenosis.  So, Alyssa was able to find pretty potent CBD cream and the Dr. said we could bring it in.  Thursday later afternoon,  he said he felt it was working great.  A little after that he called me and said he was starving and that they wouldn’t give him food or water.  I said, WHAT???  I called the head nurse of the ED and asked why. She said it is precautionary, incase we have to ventilate him.  I said, we do not want him vented, and he doesn’t want to be either! I called the CEO of the hospital begging for Ivermectin.  He was so rude and I felt bad because my 16 year old had to hear this nasty conversation while we were in the car.  He told me, “Better go and get an attorney and good luck!”  Then he hung up!

On Friday they gave him vanilla ice cream and some lemon ice.  On Saturday they moved him to the ICU. I asked why, for he said he was still feeling good, and the monitor stated he was doing great with his oxygen levels.  They moved him anyway.  On Sunday, one of my friends’ daughter Jamie, who was like a daughter to me, was going back to work after being on Maternity leave.  She was a nurse in the ED. She said she would go in a half hour early and check on him.  She called me at like 6:50pm and said that he was doing great, telling jokes and being Just Vinny! On Monday morning, the 13^th of December, Vince got up to go to the bathroom and collapsed.  They called Blue 100 to the ICU and Jamie ran over.  When she got there she could see it was Vince’s room.  This was at 6:32am.  I was never called until 9:30am — to be told my husband was placed on a ventilator. (we came to find out later when I hired the NP to read his chart that they started giving him oxy with no food or water-hence why he passed out when he got up to go to the bathroom!)     We were all in shock. I begged them to let me in and stay with him.  That I don’t seem to get covid! Everyone in my house had it and I didn’t get it!!  They offered an iPad that they could take into the room and set it up facing Vince.  We would talk to him 3 times a day, and sometimes at night we would be on the phone/iPad just talking to each other with him listening.  Telling jokes to him, anything we could think of.  To make sure he heard us!!!    This went on all week.  Nothing was changing.  I knew that the longer It took me to get in there the worse Vince would get.

At that point, I knew I better hire someone.  I tried reaching out to an attorney that I knew had won a case in Rochester for ivermectin and it saved the patient.  I left 3 messages that week with no response.  That following Sunday I happened to be showing one of my apartments, and I was explaining to this woman named Lorna.  She said he was the best! And…She had his CELL phone number!! She said call him.. I said on Sunday?? Well, He answered!! This was the 19^th of December.

He asked what my story was and said he would have an attorney in his group call me tomorrow. Her name was Beth. She interviewed me and asked all about Vince. She said that the courts close from Christmas through the new year and that she already had 5 cases on her desk, and didn’t think she could take one more.  But she called back 5 hours later and told me she would take our case, and what she needed from me asap.  She got it all filed and into court before the Christmas holiday on December 21, 2021, but the Judge refused to hear the case.  He ruled that he would hear it after the holiday. (One of my husbands’ best friends was a supreme court judge in the county we lived in. He couldn’t and didn’t help in any way, except to say which Judge to take it to, and didn’t even call to have a conversation with that judge. He said that Judge Jason Cook was a good guy.) The first court appearance was by zoom on January 4^th, 2022.

I went to my middle daughter’s house which was literally 3 minutes from the hospital. A zoom call was set up by my attorney, the Judge and the attorney for the hospital.  The judge stated something was wrong with how it was filed. But the attorney for the hospital said that it was ok and that we could proceed. He refused.  Next call was set up for 3  days later.  My attorney pleaded the case that we wanted Ivermectin.  That my husband was in the ICU now, and that time is of the essence.  We were tabled again for a week.  Behind the scenes I ended up hiring an NP out of Buffalo NY, we lived in Rochester, NY.  This was a suggestion of my attorney.  I gave her access to Vince’s medical Chart and felt like we at least had an inside scoop to see exactly what was going on.   Judge Jason Cook just hung up the zoom call very rudely, and everyone was gone from sight.  My daughter Alyssa came out and we looked at each other and knew.  I called my attorney and he said, “I have tried 410 cases for this, and I am going to tell you right now, he is NEVER going to rule in your favor!”  Alyssa and I just started crying!

At that point I knew what I had to do.

In the meantime, I was finally allowed in on the 27^th of December.  The protocol in my area did not allow anyone in for 21 days.  I went and sat in the lobby and begged to see him; the day before Christmas, Christmas Day and then the day after which was his 60^th birthday.  They would NOT let me in.  The 21^st day was the 27^th, the day after his birthday.  I called my friend and got 2- large syringes, and a bottle of saline.  The NP I hired ordered Ivermectin to the ONLY pharmacy in all of Rochester that would fill this prescription.  She explained that anything federally backed would not supply ivermectin: she said, “so the big guys: CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid.”  The one that would fill it was a family owned pharmacy!  The other thing that she found out while reading his chart is that they gave him Barcitinib.  She said, get him off that right away! I said, I refused the Remdesivir, but didn’t know about the Barcitinib.  She said it’s just as bad! It can cause lung fungus/lung issues.  So, I called the head nurse and told her to get him off that asap!!  It took them 5 more days to stop it.

When I finally got in to see my husband, I was only allowed in for 4 hours.  Their rules were only 2 people could get approved for a visit, and only one could go in at a time.  I had 3 daughters- who was I going to leave out??  While I was inside from the 27^th of December until the judge refused to rule, I begged for other things for my husband.  I brought in lotion that I had mixed with Ivermectin lotion/gel and rubbed his legs and arms with it, and worked his legs and arms.  The nurses knew no different.  Every day while I was there, I was confronted by either a doctor or a hospital coordinator to sign a DNR for my husband.  One day I remember this one Doctor on the rotation, (there were 7 doctors in the cardiac cath lab, that would rotate into the ICU for they did not have a permanent ICU doc yet-which meant a different doctor like every 2-3 days. Probably so that one doctor didn’t get attached or that I could work on to do the right thing!)  She was not very nice and in my husbands room she was literally raising her voice to me that I HAD to sign this because he is DYING!!  I pulled her skinny ass into the hallway and said, YOU EVER TALK LIKE THAT IN MY HUSBANDS ROOM AGAIN, I WILL TAKE YOU DOWN MYSELF!  I was shaking! Dr. Alexandra Adams.  The only truth I knew was that my husband could hear me and his girls!!  I sure didn’t need someone telling him he was dying!!  I also had photos of our family all over the walls so that they could see who they were killing!! Nothing seemed to work at that time!

I begged every day for vitamins, and I tried the suave on his feet that my chiropractor friend made with garlic and oregano.  I was trying anything I could think of that might  help.  I did finally get acupuncture approved because there was someone in the hospital that was approved for it.  I would fight for everything I could for the 4 hours I was allowed in. I asked for Zinc, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D—I was told NO that it is not part of the protocol! So,  I started giving the Ivermectin on the 7^th of January and on the 15^th my husband opened his eyes.  The nurse that as not from this hospital originally but came from Pittsburgh said, “Wow, him opening his eyes is VOLUNTARY! With all he has on board it is actually shocking!”    I decided on that day that whatever doctor came in I would beg them to help.   A friend of mine did that for her husband and it worked, they had a doctor that came from NYC and he saved him after getting his last rites…amazing!  So, guess who it was!  Dr Larj…the same doctor that spoke very nicely to me when Vince was in the ER. He was talking about how he was going out to eat that night for Oysters and Dirty martini’s…I said Wow you are talking my husbands language!!  I beg you to help me get him back, to breathe on his own, something!!   I asked about the Ventilator and a special drug/steroid a friend of mine that was a nurse in NYC was using and it worked.  They told me they could not give it with this ventilator, it didn’t work with this one.   I begged them to let me buy one, where could I get one, something, anything…and they said no we can’t not get one.  I begged to take my husband to another hospital and they just laughed at me and said, “how are you going to move him?  He is ventilated and we can’t risk moving him!”  I had a respiratory therapist came in that was not typically there, she said she “moonlights from another hospital on the weekends”  and she had stated that they had that drug my friend told me all about and that they were using it at Highland Hospital, but those ventilators worked with it, this one did not.  Dr Larj was the only Doctor that did actually help.  He was with us a total of 3 days before he was rotated back out.  But, he started “lowering the peep” on the ventilator so that Vince could try and start breathing on his own! But once he was gone there was nobody helping Vince again.

It came to the morning of the 16^th and I begged to talk to the head Doctor, Justin Wise.  The Head nurse set up a zoom meeting with my older 2 daughters, I did not want the 16 year old to be a part of this conversation!   Alyssa, the middle daughter said, “So, what is the plan” and he said, there’s really nothing more we can do.  Alyssa said, “So we are just going to let him lie there and die?” and he said “Well, we could give him a lung transplant, but the problem with that is that he would have to be able to walk to rehab, and he can’t do that!”  and chuckled……………….  It was horrible to say the least.

Two days after my husband had opened his eyes himself, I was worried what they might do to him now!  Part of me was hopeful, and another was just worried and sick inside. That 2^nd day after, when I went to see Vince, I was told that they finally hired a full time Doctor for the  ICU.  When I got to his room, they had removed his arterial line, his feeding tube, and one of the medications on his IV.  Typically there were always 3: Propofol, Fentanyl, and a medication that stated with a D, that I can not remember right now.  I flipped out and his oxygen level was dropping into the low 90’s…then 80’s. I called the head nurse and she called this new doctor and she said, “well, when a line has been in too long it is better to take it out and have it cleaned”…

The next day when I am in my husband was still not doing well, they begged me again to sign the DNR.  I said I would but that I had 3 other people that needed to decide that not only myself.  IF the girls could see their Dad, then we would sign it.   The girls came in, and we were all there together. We all cried together.  I had my husband’s head phones on him because he loved his music. We all just sat or laid on his bed.   They finally kicked us out at 6pm but said that I could stay.  By 2 am his Oxygen level was going into the low 80’s and they were doing NOTHING to help.  I was then worried the boys, our son in laws would not get to see Vince.  So, I called and they all came over to the hospital.  There was a huge snow storm and 4-5 feet of snow had fallen.  We all stayed with him and I finally signed the DNR.  My biggest regret of all.  Vince died a short few minutes later.
