COVID-19 Humanity Betrayal ㅤ Memory Project

My name is Tammy, Kevin’s wife. He was complaining with a bad headache on January the 14. It lasted about 24 hours and the headache was gone. However, he still was sick with a low grade fever and feeling very bad. After a couple days he still was no better and still running a fever. It’s not like him to run a fever for long. So, I decided to take him to the Emergency room at Wilkes Regional hoping they would give him something to get better.

We arrived there around 3:00 pm and he wasn’t seen until 11:30 pm. The male nurse came in and did a Covid test. He told Kevin it would take hours before they got the results. At that time a doctor came in and told us the same thing. I told her would she please give him an antibiotic or something to help him. She said yes. Also, she said I know you all been here for a long time and we won’t have the result for a few hours. Then she gave me an app to get on my phone to get his results and told me she would give him an antibiotic.

After she went out of the room she came back in after about 5 minutes telling me she can’t give him any antibiotic. That it would have to run it course we were very disheartened. We thought they could have gave him something. So I brought him home and tried to doctor him the best I knew how. He still couldn’t get over the fever and wasn’t eating much of anything. My sister had told me to check his oxygen level. So I did and his oxygen level was 79.

I was scared to death cause I knew anything below 90 wasn’t good. So I took him back to the first hospital I could get to. Which was Wilkes Regional. After waiting around 30 minutes they take him back and put him on 100 percent oxygen. There were sick people in the halls and they didn’t have a room for him. I knew they wouldn’t let me stay with him so I came home. They let me FaceTime him and text him.

I got back over to the hospital the next morning he still was in the Emergency room. They had told me they was going to take him to Winston. I was fine with that cause I knew they were better equipped and knew more about what to do about a Covid Patient. I had told them I didn’t want him to get the medicine called Remdesivir. I had a friend texting me telling me that the Remdesivir is killing people. So, I was very upset and had talked to the doctors and nurses and told them not to give him that medicine. But I think they had gave him some the first night he was in there after me telling them no Remdesivir.

After them saying we gonna send him to Winston they came back in there and told me they was keeping him there. I asked why? You just told me a couple hours ago he was going to Winston. Well the excuse was no room well someone had passed in the ICU with Covid and they sent him to that room .At first his fever had broken and he was eating. I was so happy.

He seemed to be getting better. They had even let him set in a chair and done Physical therapy on him. But by the next morning I went in there and he had a cpap on him. And I asked why had he got this on him they said his oxygen drop thru the night. We had to put that on him. Well that whole day I held my husbands hand and told him not to talk. It was wearing him out. Only to find out that pushes air down your lungs and wear you out.

He had struggled all day trying to keep his oxygen up to 90. Well by that evening the doctor and nurse came in and looked at me and said you are going to have to make a decision. I looked at them and asked why? They told me if he wasn’t put on a ventilator he will die tonight. I just lost it and I looked at my precious husband and told him I couldn’t make that decision. What did he want me to do? I was so upset I told him I am going to call your mom and see what she said.

I told her we both was so scared and I know my husband was. But I told him I love him with all my heart and I would be there every day till he woke up. And it was like they was hurrying me. I had no chance to talked to him or his family didn’t either. My heart was broken and my husband had never been this sick. I didn’t want to lose him so they put the ventilator in. And I stay as long as they would let me.

I was back over there in the morning. When I walked in the room I noticed they had his privates wrapped in gauze and there was a lot of blood on the gauze. I asked what has happened for him to have that on him they gave me some kind of stories his catheter had came out and they had to put another one in. He had bled so much they thought he might need blood. But they told me he didn’t everything was fine.

They had him hooked to so much medicine. It was unreal. They had him on fentanyl and three blood pressure medicines. Other medicines as well. But on the 7th they told me they was going to try and do Dialysis on him on the morning of the 8th. Well I had got over there early that morning. I had tried to talk to the nurse before I left the house but she was in the room with him by the time I got to the hospital. His mom called and told me the nurse told her his body was rejecting the Dialysis. I told her I was there and I would let her know.

When I got up there they told me that they had tried to run them for two hours. Why they didn’t do that before things got so bad I will never know. After 1200 they told me to call the family that his oxygen level was dropping and we needed to make some hard decisions. They told us his organs was shutting down and he was brain dead. I was devastated to hear this.

So me and his family and my family decided to take him off of the ventilator. I didn’t want to lose him but he wouldn’t want to live like that. So they talked me into a do not Resuscitate because it would break his bones. And he had already been thru enough. I want everyone to know his story. I believe if they haven’t gave him the Remdesivir he would be here with me today. I have lost my soulmate my lover my best friend. My world was shattered that day but I know I will see you again. Until then I will love you until I meet you in Heaven my love, your wife Tammy.
